A room with a view

Last year I moved to Melbourne to pursue academic studies in art curatorship, to finish a Masters at the University of Melbourne, something I started in 2010. Last year, while attending Uni a day per week, most of my time was taken up by the work of finding my rhythm in a large sprawling metropolis, familiarising myself again with a different criminal justice system, a habitus inside of which I remain a “familiar” stranger, accepting legal aid briefs across the length and breadth of regional, remote, suburban and city courts. Between trips to courts I tried to familiarise myself with an arts industry too big for an outsider finding her way around multiple labyrinths, searching for the comradeship of likeminded souls. In a city of unfamiliarity, Darwin’s hundred hellos count for nothing. Today, I settle in front of my new abode’s work desk. I have found a small apartment, within which I hope to work, study, write, hatch and plan. This is my new desk in front of a large window which overlooks the roof and tree tops in North Fitzroy. In the distance I can make out Melbourne city’s office towers. I am starting this new chapter, with an attempt to complete the first draft of a 2000word essay, before preparing for the legal week ahead in Melbourne, Wadeye and Darwin. A lovely day will pass outside, and the temperamental autumn sunshine will keep me company as I aim to complete my messy to-do-list in time for a late afternoon stroll.
